Against Studios: Let's start
with something simple, what do you think about the character
based on you, as it is portrayed in the comic? What are the
similarities and differences?
Dream Zero: The DZ
characteristics are pretty lively with interesting things to
say. Much like Eiji and myself he greets, and chats away just
like we do in person. If you take a look at the eating habits,
you'll see that DZ is always looking to go somewhere for food
and drinks. If there's a sandwich, he's there. And I think that
plays nicely to the characters in the story from ourselves in
person.
The outfits are
pretty true to how we dress. If anything was different I say my
hair got a lot more volume than I'm used to. But then again it's
BASED on characters and not a direct translation.
AS: Another project that you
were both working before, Cerberus, inspired Tom to make this
into a cyberpunk noir. Do you see traces of the idea in it? Any
similarities?
DZ: The ERGO thing, is
something similar to the Cryonet Cyberian complex layout. The
digital virus, is similar to the original concept of cyber
crimes in a virtual reality setting.
The thing I
like about Eiji's version is it’s original and fresh. You
wouldn't
know about any
similarities unless you hung out with us on our manga story trip
nights. He takes an original concept and tosses his own flavor
in it, and makes it into an original story.
I'm not sure I
could have done it better myself.
AS: Where do you see the
story and your character in the manga going in the next ten
volumes or so?
DZ: I think you'll find the
story to take some intriguing twists along with keeping a level
head on reality. I think the DZ character will probably get more
involved in this than he wants to. But hanging out with Eiji
will probably convince him to.
The Tifa
Character is one to keep your eye on. In fact I think it's the
best drawn character so far and with mass potential.
Combined all
three you have on your hands a really good dark gritty story.
Plus the fact
that Mr. Shinrow draws it and quite well, it only adds to the
emotion and the realism of the effect.
AS: Do you believe that a
side story could be made from your character? Have him as a main
character and see the events from his view?
DZ: It's possible. Maybe a
short side story. But The DZ character is probably something
else on his own. This is Mr. Shinrow's story. And we're
following his point of view.
AS: Is there anything you
would like to change or see more of in the future?
DZ: At this point, I'm not
sure. Eiji has managed to cover all bases in what I like in a
story, let alone a manga type one. So I say let's just wait and
see what he comes up with!
AS: If this gets picked up
for a major motion picture, who could you imagine playing you in
the silver screen?
DZ: Hopefully myself. It'd
be great if we could get Eiji, Tifa and myself to play our
characters.
AS: How about a game version
of the manga? Could you see the manga being adapted for a game?
Which genre do you think it would be and how it would be
played?
DZ: That might be a little
far. UNLESS they can do it somehow genius-like. I've seen a lot
of good stories and things get watered down by having games made
out of them.
However if it's
original content geniously done, it could be possible.
AS: Sort of like with a side
story that is unrelated to the main story? Kind of like Cowboy
Bebop: the movie?
DZ: That's actually a very
good idea.
AS: Do you think a prequel
would be a possibility? Will the characters be able to sustain
the same way they are now if we show them years before they went
through the change that made them into who they are today?
DZ: I think that would
depend on the story. How well this turns out to determine any
other stories. If you do too much at one time then you lose
focus of the project that is currently at hand.
AS: Do you think it would be
possible to get other writers and artists to do the side story,
and actually work as a total? Sort of like the media bash of
Matrix, Blood or the .Hack series?
DZ: It's tricky. Blood is a
good series but it's ultimately divided among fans and cultists.
Even though all the stories are from the same world ask any
person who knows about Blood, and you'll get a good mix of
people who claim the anime is best or the manga is best, but
almost no one appreciates the combined effeort of the two
franchises that make up that particular world.
Another thing I
don't care for, is when reading webcomics especially, is guest
artists and guest writers. They should do it more like mangas do
it. It's put in a separate place with a separate thing. You
never see Guest artists and writers plucked into the middle of
the story. It's always either 1. on their website under a
special section, or 2. Put in the back of the manga away from
the main story.
As a fan of
this particular work, I personally would not want to see any
outsiders being shifted in the middle of this. If they get their
own section, then I'm all for it. But I don't think they should
have anything to do with the main project.
AS: Nice. What was your
favorite scene in the manga?
DZ: The Bar Scene
Reminiscence. The bantering alone was so realistic along with
the chilling habits. It's was pure entertainment.
It was a
discussion and a trading of thoughts but also to unwind. Just as
the characters
themselves were doing, as a reader I forgot about the bigger
crisis at hand and was caught up in the moment of hanging out. I
felt like I was there with them and not out in the city.
AS: Thank you for your time.
DZ: Of course. Thank you for
this artistic presentation of a story.
I'm
anticipating more! |
