Ours.
The sand felt sharp, and there seemed to be some already
sticking onto Ryo's skin, rasping and scratching for as much
attention they could get. The beach was empty, for some reason,
and the world was quiet and still.
Eliza was just jumping around amongst the waves, giggling as the
cold tickled her skin.
Ryo felt tired, yet did not want to sleep, his whole body was
sore from everything they had done this day.
"Yo!" Eliza suddenly jumped on him, sticking her hands under his
t-shirt.
"Ouch, your skin is cold!" Ryo screamed in protest as the
icyness of her hands shot through his nerves. "What are you
trying to do?"
"Warm my hands up, if you don't mind."
"Well, I do, but not that you'd listen anyway, right?"
She only replied with a satisfied smile.
"So where to now, woman?" Ryo asked as he parted her long wet
hair from her face.
"I don't know, where do you wanna go?"
"I really don't care, it's really all just up to you."
"Well, I'm happy just staying here."
"Then here it is, I guess." He smiled back.
The waves seemed to echo their agreements too.
She lied her head on his chest.
"I can hear the pitty-pattar of your heart." She said, closing
her eyes.
"I believe you're using the wrong onomatopeia."
"It's not like you're even saying the word right." She snickered
at this.
"Well, I'm not an English teacher, so I don't have to."
"Your plans to ruin the English language is slowly coming into
light."
"I thought I've always made it obvious that ruining the English
language was my intent in life?"
"I don't know, I haven't exactly been listening to you for the
last year or so."
"No wonder you always gave me runny eggs."
Eliza laughed at this, her body shaking as she did so, her
entire motion felt through Ryo's body as a wave, spreading in an
arc through his senses.
"I thought you liked runny eggs?" She playfully hit him on the
chest.
"Only on raisin toast mornings. For some reason, dipping that
toast on runny yolk tastes marvelous, even when you spread jam
or jelly on it."
"I thought jam and jelly were the one and the same?"
"Now who's trying to ruin the English language?"
She laughed joyfully again at this, spreading out her body on
top of him as much as she could.
"I like this, I wish we could be here for an eternity or so."
"How about infinity plus one?"
"You can't add one to infinity."
"That's just a common child belief."
"I thought adding one to infinity WAS the common child belief?"
"How did we ever get to this conversation again?"
"How do we ALWAYS get on these kinds of conversations?"
"Hey, I thought you liked these kinds of conversations?"
"I do," She did that beautiful smile again. "But that isn't the
point being discussed here now, is it?"
"What IS the point we're discussing anyway?"
"I don't know, I thought you were the lead on this
conversation?"
"Now that's a pretty cheap way out of thinking hard on
something."
"It's always worked."
"Blah!"
They both laughed at Ryo's last outburst, none of them knew why
it was funny at all.
The moon reflected the loneliness of the night.
They were both quiet for a while, as they lied there on the
beach, each contemplating their own thoughts.
"Hey," Ryo finally spoke again.
"What?"
"Want to run away somewhere?"
"Huh?" She raised her head up in surprise, only to face the
blank expression that's on Ryo's face.
"Run away, so that you wouldn't have to go back again."
"You can't be serious, they'll track you down..."
"I know what would happen to us, but it'll be a nice try
anyway." He smiled at her. "Plus, it'll buy us some more time
together."
"I don't think it would matter at all," She lied down her head
again. "They'll still eventually get us, and we'll still
eventually be separated again."
"It's worth a try, I mean, there's gotta be a way to get away."
"We both know it's impossible, they'll be able to track us down
through the genetic trail we leave behind."
"Yet if we run enough steps in front of them, and continue
running, we'll be able to keep away from them forever."
"Yet can we really keep running forever?"
"If there's a will, there's a way."
"And if we're caught, your life will be ruined..."
"Big deal, it's pretty ruined already." He chuckled. "And
without you, it'll pretty much be gone."
"Yet you would still have a life left, to start fresh again, to
continue living with hope."
"Will it be worth living a life that's empty though?"
"It will still be life, and no matter how empty it is, it's
still worth more than death."
"How do we really know though?"
"I don't know."
Ryo could feel her clutching him tighter.
"Yet I would want you to live," She continued. "For that would
be my biggest want in life, to know that you'll live and live to
enjoy a sunny day, to live and learn of hope somewhere, to live
and start again in life. I would wish that more than anything
else."
Ryo didn't know what to say.
"I'll still live if we do get caught."
"But it'll be a miserable one, where all your freedom is
stripped away."
"I'll be living one already whenever you're gone."
Eliza didn't say anything back.
The waves recycled their silence in the night.
"We'll run then," She said. "Run as far as we can reach."
Ryo just nodded, and kissed her on the forehead, and embraced
her closer.
The night seemed brighter, and the clouds would try to not
obscure the light.
She would be gone when the morning rays woke him up from his
sleep. |
