When Ryo woke up yesterday from the sunlight flashing through the window, it had already been two o'clock in the afternoon. Looking at his own watch, he realized that he'd been asleep for almost over thirteen hours. The longest he'd probably had for years.
Embarrased, yet didn't know why, Ryo scratched his head and started to get up from the bed. That was when he heard the noise underneath his shoe soles, paper crumbling under his shoes.
Lifting his foot up, he picked up the paper. It was a phone number, written on a dirty bar napkin.
Puzzled, Ryo took out his cell phone and dialed the number.
"Hello?" A young female voice picked up on the other side.
"Hi, who am I speaking with?" Ryo replied with curiosity.
"Depends, who am I speaking with?"
"I'm a friend of someone that you may know, a man by the name of Eiji Shinrow."
"Okay." She paused. "And who am I speaking with again?"
Ryo sighed in frustration. "My name is Ryo Hayashi."
"Ryo Hayashi." The female voice repeated on the other side, sounding far away from the speaker, as if she was talking to someone else at the other side.
A silence, and Ryo lifted an eyebrow up in curiosity.
The voice came back on the other side again. "Our address is 191 E. 11th Avenue, Apartment 7. Columbus, Ohio, 43201." She said in a monotone voice. "Come see us this Saturday night, we'll be waiting for you."
And just like that, the line went dead, and the dial tone greeted Ryo with the usual care.
Ryo redialed the number again, but all that it came back from the other side was now the recorded voice telling him "I'm sorry, but the number you're trying to reach has been disconnected. Please try another number or hold on to the line, an operator will be right with you."
And no matter how many times he redialed the number again, it was the same response over and over again.
