We.
"Hey." Her voice came through the speaker as a whisper, the
static grains filtered through the phone line that made them
both closer in distance.
"Where are you?" Ryo's voice sounded foreign to him, feign and
weak, ready to collapse upon itself.
"The beach, by Haku restaurant." She sounded distant as well, as
if split from her usual self. "It's kinda chilly here."
"You know that you could get in trouble for driving there alone,
right?"
"Yeah." She gave a quick giggle, one that lasted so short, it
didn't even feel like it was uttered at all. "But that's
alright, I'll just give them the excuse that I'm a chauffeur
driving to pick up my master or something."
"And if they follow you?"
"I'll come back home and honk in front of our apartment." That
short giggle again, softer and fainter than before. "You will
come out to bail me out, right?"
"Only if I'm promised that I'm not gonna be arrested for that."
"Nothing can be promised now, ya know?"
Ryo didn't say anything, the static speaking for itself in
silence.
"Are you coming back anytime soon?" He spoke after a few
seconds.
"Maybe."
"It is the last day of trial, you know?"
"Yeah, I do." She gave out a sigh. "That's why I kinda wanted to
stay away for awhile."
"To enjoy freedom for the last time?" He tried smiling at his
own joke, but couldn't, something inside was pulling hard.
"No." She paused, as if thinking hard of a physics theory to
explain the atomic weight of Mars. "To make our good-bye
easier."
He was kinda stunned by this, but didn't know why. "How's
staying away gonna make our good-bye easier?"
"It just will." She said. "I won't have to remember why I
enjoyed being with you so much, or why I liked the weird things
you do. It'll make going away a lot easier."
"Hmm... And I wanted to spend today with you as much as I could,
to remember those things."
"See?" Short giggle, weaker and weaker again. "If I'm away, you
won't have to remember, and it'll be much, much easier for you
too." Giggle. "I mean, if you do remember how cute and lovely I
am, you might grab my legs and refuse to let me go or
something."
He was the one with the short laugh now. "Whatever. What do you
think I am? A little five year old boy or something?"
"I know I would."
Silence.
The waves echoed softly in the background, as if trying to
reclaim some lost memories that have been washed away, years
ago.
"You ARE cute and lovely, even if I won't be able to remember
every little detail of what makes you one." Ryo softly replied.
"Are you mad?" She asked.
"Of what?"
"Of me running away like this."
"No. Why would I be?"
"Because you were always mad when I ran away from problems,
instead of facing them."
"I'm not your creator, so you shouldn't listen to every little
word that I say."
"But I wanted to."
"Why?"
"To make you happy."
"You didn't have to do that to make me happy."
"But I wanted to."
"You're such a silly girl."
"Heh." Ryo could picture her face now, that smile that she
always gave when she uttered 'Heh', her eyes squinting
involuntarily.
"I'll come home now." She said almost immediatedly after her
laugh.
"That's alright, you don't have to hurry."
"I'm not, I'm just kinda done now." The waves still roamed in
the background. "I just wanted to see the beach and call you
from it, now that I just did that, I think I'm all done over
here."
"Alright then." He smiled at her simple logic.
"I'm gonna go now, okay?"
Ryo wanted to hang up the phone, but something inside him
wouldn't let him do it. "Eliza?" He uttered before she hung up,
sounding like a lost child crying for his parents to pick him
up.
"Yes?"
"It doesn't have to end this way, there's still a chance that I
can buy you there..."
Silence again. Quiet pause.
"We both know you can't, Ryo..."
"I'm sure there's a way..."
She didn't say anything again.
"Remember that coffee place that we always go to when you're
writing your stories?" She said after that pause of silence.
"Y-Yeah." He was kind of surprised by her question.
"I kinda want to go there right now. Do you mind?"
"Um... No..."
"Do you want me to pick you up?"
"So you're really gonna become a chauffeur driver, huh?"
She laughed at this, not a short giggle, but a real one. "I
don't know, will you respond when I honk outside our apartment?"
"Only if you promise that I won't be arrested if I do so."
She smiled secretly for him, that one smile that she wouldn't do
for anyone else... |
