Humankind
The world felt different these days, specially after the war
started. Although it was fought away from the country, across
the sea and onto somewhere foreign to them, the impact of it was
still felt in Ryo's country. Like one of those echoes that are
created, a round wave slowly spreading around the pond, the
country slowly deteriorated because of this war. The economy was
depleted from all the sources that the war was eating away, and
anxiety and frustration were starting to rise on people's faces.
"We are the new United States." Ryo said one day as he sipped
his coffee one morning, eating breakfast while watching the
morning shows that splatter across the channels. "I wonder if
this would change anything."
"Huh?" She didn't know what he was saying, it didn't make much
sense.
"I remember studying this myth back in High School, in my
mythology class, about this nation that existed a few centuries
ago. Of course, nobody can confirm if this country really
exists, because their government were so ashamed at the end of
their nation's life that they erased everything, all files and
books, so only one or two books were found at its digging site.
"According to the books, men and women once lived together, long
ago, and were both considered the same race. But something
happened, and women revolted against the decisions of men, so
men had to put them down, and women were then degraded to just
objects with no rights and freedom. I guess our society were
kind of like a continuation of them, like some survivors from
that nation colonized our first cities, and we accepted their
rules and laws."
"Men and women were considered equal?" Eliza was kinda
confounded by this. "But why?"
"Don't know, I guess because we're both from the same ancestors
or something."
"We are?"
"Well, I guess it kinda makes sense, you guys do share all the
same genes and DNA as we do, so it's natural to assume that you
guys have a soul and are probably created from the same
ancestors."
"But still..."
"I don't know." He smiled. "Maybe if you were taught that we
were all equals and were treated equal since birth, you would
feel differently and act differently towards this, but since you
were kinda programmed to think that you're inferior and just a
object since you were born, it's natural for you to question the
things that contradict your learnings."
"Huh?"
"What would you feel if we were both equals at this house?"
"What?" She was surprised by this.
"I think we should." He snickered at this. "You know, just check
it out. I mean, we're not losing anything from this."
"But..." She was quiet for a moment. "Are you okay with this? I
mean, you paid for me and..."
"Sure, I don't see why not." He smiled. "I mean, deep inside,
we're both probably the same anyway, right?"
She didn't know if he was serious or not. |
