It was awhile before they gave him a call back, but when they
finally did, Ryo couldn't wait to spur out all the questions
that have been racking up in his brain, all the curiosities that
needed to be fulfilled.
Eiji worked at a Blockbuster video store near where he lived
when he died, just a couple of blocks down from where he had
last given out his breath. It was the last job Eiji took before
he started working for the Hyatt, and the longest job he had
ever held while he was at Columbus.
They were bound to remember him there.
Considering that it's been over a year and a half since Eiji
last worked there, Ryo really didn't expect there to be anybody
besides the general manager to have worked with Eiji. But he was
wrong, it seemed like all the managers except for two of them
knew Eiji and had worked with him for over two years.
"So what stood out for him during the time you knew him?" Ryo
asked to the first person that called him back, the assistant
manager named Mya.
"I guess the fact that he was a really hard working guy." Mya
replied. "He always volunteered for any kind of shifts and would
work for about thirty-five hours every week even when he had
full time at school." She paused as she thought about it. "I
remembered that sometimes he would go on for two or three days
without sleep because of it."
"Really? Did he just have that much work to handle?"
"Well, it was that and the fact that he was an insomniac." Mya
replied. "He always had trouble sleeping at night, usually not
going to bed till about seven AM in the morning."
"I see."
"I remember one time he was really sick, so much that he could
barely speak and pale all over his body. Even his lips were
shriveled up and white. But even then, he came in to work, and
did those long hours looking as if he was going to die."
"And you guys didn't send him home?"
"Well," Mya replied, a little shame showing in her eyes. "We
didn't really have anybody else to replace him, only he knew how
to do what he was doing at the time." She paused. "And our
general manager would push him as long as he agreed to it, since
Eiji was the type of guy who would never say "no" even when he
was incapable of doing it." She sniffed a little. "You always
knew that he could rely on him."
Ryo looked at her and asked her if she could call anybody else
who worked with Eiji at the time. |
